Milagro Hotel and Casino

The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)

The Milagro Hotel and Casino is a Las Vegas landmark that turns from a recognizable remnant of the old world into an explosive hazard. Its snow globe, a tiny image of the tower surrounded by falling artificial snow, gives Peter a moment of wonder; the real hotel’s trapped methane then makes escape a matter of seconds.

Landmark and miniature

Inside the Desert Gift Emporium, Amy finds a glass globe among the shop’s shelves and shakes it, sending flakes through a miniature city. At its center stands a white tower that Peter recognizes as the building they are in. The base identifies the scene as the Milagro Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, making the souvenir an exact miniature of their immediate surroundings: a small, intact image of a place they have entered in its damaged reality.

The globe’s appeal lies in that double vision. What Amy holds is beautiful and contained; the hotel around them is neither. The recognizable tower links the object to the travelers’ present location, while its enclosed snow and tiny buildings reduce a vast city to something Peter can hold in his hand.

A building turned hazard

The party reaches the hotel’s fifteenth floor and watches night fall. For several panicked minutes, the blocked stairwell threatens to force them toward the lower levels. It is jammed with broken furniture, mattresses, and suitcases, all bent and smashed as if hurled from a great height. Hollis proposes opening an elevator and climbing its shaft far enough to get around the obstruction, assuming its cable is intact.

The building’s danger is not limited to the debris. Michael explains that the foul smell comes from sewer gas, mostly methane, rather than the slims. Beneath the hotel lies a vast pool of century-old waste, accumulated from the city and trapped like a fermentation tank. He warns that if it releases, the hotel could ignite. The explanation turns the setting’s ordinary-looking interior into a concealed store of fuel.

The explosion and escape

The warning becomes immediate when Peter and Alicia flee through a loading-dock door. After the grenade detonates inside, the gas ignites in a second, deeper blast. The door shoots above them; a wave of fire follows, and they roll over the edge of the dock as the structure erupts. Peter presses his face to the earth and covers his head while further pockets of gas explode and fire travels upward through the hotel.

Glass and other debris rain down across the pavement. Peter breathes smoke and dust, and Alicia pulls him onward before the burning building can engulf them. They cross the street and take cover behind the rusted hulk of an overturned car. The hotel that had first appeared as a miniature city in a glass globe has become a full-scale inferno, and its transformation makes the old landmark a direct threat to the lives of those escaping it.
